Box Score (Indianapolis, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Miners dropped the first set two sets then rallied to win the next two but couldn't complete the comeback as it fell in five sets at 10
th ranked Indianapolis
3-2 (16-25, 28-30, 26-24, 25-19, 9-15) on Sunday. It was the type of match expected between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
S&T (14-10, 10-1 GLVC) held an early lead at 4-3 in the opening set before the Greyhounds (22-3, 11-0 GLVC) scored 8 of the next 10 points to move ahead 11-6. The Miners closed to within 11-10, but the 'Hounds scored 14 of the last 20 points to win 25-16. UIndy hit .208 percent in the set while S&T hit just .093 percent.
For the second straight day the Miners had an epic second set that needed more points to decide it. This one saw 17 ties and 10 lead changes. S&T had leads of 12-8 and 16-13, but saw the Greyhounds rally. The Miners led 22-21 late in the frame before UIndy moved ahead with back-to-back points. S&T got a kill from
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia), one of her 16 on the day, to knot it back up at 23-all. The 'Hounds regained the lead at 24-23, but back-to-back attack errors by Kourtney Crawford gave the Miners a set point at 25-24. UIndy then scored two straight to get its second set point of the frame, but this time it was S&T's turn to rally with back-to-back points. The Miners led 27-26, but couldn't close it out as the Greyhounds scored four of the last five to win 30-28.
The third set was just as tight as set two with 16 ties and a lead change. S&T held a 23-18 lead late in the set only to see UIndy score five straight to tie it up at 23-all. Meyer put the Miners back ahead 24-23, but Kristina Kerrigan tied it with one of her 23 kills on the next swing. S&T gained a set point thanks to a service error and then Meyer ended the set with her sixth kill of the stanza.
The Miners led for a majority of set four and was able to withstand a couple of runs by the Greyhounds. UIndy cut a five point deficit to three late, but S&T was able to close out with kills from Meyer and Haslag to win 25-19 and set up the fifth and deciding set.
The finale was tied at 2-2 when the 'Hounds took control scoring seven of the next 10 points to move in front 9-5. S&T wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as UIndy took the set 15-9.
The Miners had 63 kills in the match and hit .153 percent. Meyer and Haslag paced the attack with 16 kills apiece.
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) chipped in with 13 more.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had a double-double with 56 assists and 17 digs.
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) recorded a career-high 36 digs in the match and became just the third player in school history to top 1,000 digs.
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) finished with seven total blocks while Haslag had six.
The Greyhounds finished the contest with 75 kills and hit .194 percent. They had four players reach double figures in kills led by Kerrigan. Brittany Anglemeyer had 19 kills while Arielle Knafel chipped in with 13 and Crawford added 12. Meghan Blinkerd dished out 65 assists while Amy Oldenburg had 29 digs.
S&T is back at home on Friday night when it hosts Maryville University beginning at 7 p.m., at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
