S&T bounces back with 74-62 win over Bellarmine

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners got an all-around victory over Bellarmine 74-62 on Saturday. The Knights (6-8, 0-6 GLVC) did a great job of taking away S&T's (11-3, 6-1 GLVC) top two scorers in Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) but couldn't stop the rest of the team as they accounted for 57 of the team's 74 points in the win.

The Lady Miners were led by Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton)'s 13 points and nine rebounds while Parks dropped in 11 pts, nine rebounds and Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) chipped in with 11 as well. S&T turned it over a season-low nine times while shooting 44 percent (25-for-57) from the field. It also made a season-high eight three's in the contest led by three from Knar and two from Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown).

The Lady Miners fell behind the Knights 4-0 within the first minute before running off seven straight to take the lead. Bellarmine answered with another four in a row before Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) put S&T ahead for good with a pair of free throws which sparked a 13-1 run over a four minute stretch.

The Knights got as close as 22-14 on a layup from Allison Matheis with 6:50 left to play in the opening frame. The Lady Miners answered with yet another run scoring 12 of the next 15 points grabbing their biggest lead of the half at 34-17 on a layup by Sample with 3:33 to play.

Bellarmine closed to within 11 at the break by scoring the final six points of the first half.

S&T shot just 35.5 percent (11-of-31) in the opening half but were 4-for-10 from downtown and 8-of-9 at the foul line. Sample had nine points and rebounds to lead the Lady Miners at the break.

The Knights made just 29 percent (9-for-31) of their attempts in the first half and were led by Matheis and Therese Montano combining for 18 of the 23 points.

S&T built a double digit lead early in the second half and then held Bellarmine at arm's bay the rest of the contest. The Lady Miners led by as many as 22 in the contest on a layup by Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) with less than seven minutes to play.

Bellarmine scored the final five points of the contest to make the final score closer than the game appeared.

S&T made 14-of-26 (54 percent) from the floor in the second half. It was 8-for-17 from downtown and shot 84 percent (16-of-19) at the foul line.

The Knights finished the game shooting 39 percent from the floor and 53 percent from three while outrebounding the Lady Miners by a 35-to-33 margin.

Matheis and Montano accounted for 41 of Bellarmine's 62 points. Kelsey Lamb had six rebounds.

S&T will be back in action on Thursday evening traveling to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield at 5:30 p.m.
