S&T opens 2011 season with scoreless draw at Southwest Baptist

(Bolivar, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dominated on the stat sheet but were unable to find the back of the net as it opened its 2011 campaign with a 0-0 draw in double OT at Southwest Baptist on Monday. S&T (0-0-1) outshot the host Bearcats (0-1-1) 20-11 and 9-3 in shots on goal but a couple of great saves by SBU's keeper and some tough luck prevented the Lady Miners from picking up the win.

S&T controlled play for most of the opening half and it showed in the box score as it got off seven shots, three of which were on goal. Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) nearly put the Lady Miners on top in the 15th minute when she sent a shot towards the upper corner of the goal but the Bearcats Megan Link made a diving save keeping the game scoreless.

S&T had a couple of other opportunities in the opening stanza as well but couldn't convert. It outshot the Bearcats 7-3 in the first frame.

The Lady Miners had a golden opportunity early in the second half to get on the board. Kirstin Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) had her shot cleared off the line and the rebound went out to Lauren Todd (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South). She shot it from the top of the box but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

Caitlin Suerig nearly gave SBU in the 53rd minute but Stacey Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant ) made a sensational save to keep the ball out of the goal.

S&T finished regulation with a 14-9 edge in shots.

Young nearly won the game in the 96th minute. She hit a shot across the box that got past the keeper but hit the post and stayed out. Leah Williams (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) had a chance at the rebound but couldn't convert.

In the second overtime the Lady Miners had a chance to win it in the final minute but Colleen Lewis (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall Academy)'s shot was turned away by Link.

S&T outshot the Bearcats 6-2 in the overtime periods with four of the six shots on goal.

The Lady Miners return to action on Friday evening traveling to Kansas City, Mo., to open conference play at Rockhurst beginning at 5 p.m.
