ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T finally knows its opponent for its opening round game in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Championships -- the Knights from Bellarmine University.
The Miners and Knights will square off in the first round contest Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. S&T was already set as the tournament's No. 2 seed after clinching the GLVC West Division title Sunday, but had to wait until makeup games involving teams in the GLVC East were completed over the last two days.
Northern Kentucky swept a doubleheader from Bellarmine Monday, meaning that Tuesday's twinbill between Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside would decide who the Miners would open with. Lewis took both games Tuesday night by identical 8-4 scores and landed the No. 5 seed, relegating Bellarmine to the seventh spot and a meeting with the Miners.
Missouri S&T swept a doubleheader from Bellarmine earlier this season in Louisville, Ky., winning both games in its final at-bat. The Miners scored two in the ninth to take a 6-4 win in game one, then scored twice in the seventh in the nightcap to force extra innings and put another two-run inning on the board in the ninth for a 4-2 win.
Bellarmine will come into Thursday's game at 26-24 overall, 18-15 in the GLVC, while the Miners are 28-15 overall and finished 21-7 in GLVC play. The MIners and Knights are in the same pool at UMSL with No. 3 seed Northern Kentucky (31-18, 21-13 GLVC) and No. 6 seed Drury (33-17, 21-11 GLVC). NKU and Drury will play at 9 a.m. Thursday before the S&T-Bellarmine contest.
