Miners bounce back in nightcap with rout, earn split with Rockhurst

4/2/2011 9:43:39 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After suffering its most one-sided loss of the season in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Rockhurst, the Missouri S&T baseball answered back in a big way by routing the Hawks by a 12-3 count in game two. Rockhurst took the opener of the four-game weekend series 12-0.

The Miners were blanked on seven hits in the first game by Mark Sappington, but saw their bats come to life right from the start when the nightcap began. S&T scored in each of the first three innings, tallying a run in the first when Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) drove in Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) with a sacrifice fly, then tacked on three in the second and one in the third to go up 5-0.

In the second, Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) drew a walk to open the inning and moved to second on a balk. Following an infield single by Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) and a wild pitch, Caffrey was picked off third, but that was followed by Nick Burke (Good Hope, Ill./West Prairie HS) being hit by a pitch. Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) tripled into the gap to score both runners, then scored himself on an error on a ball hit by McCord.

Caffrey atoned for his baserunning mistake by homering with two outs in the third before the Miners busted the contest open with a six-run outburst in the fifth.

Caffrey drove in the first run of the inning with a single that brought home Carter, then Brasher doubled in a run and Burke reached on an infield hit to score another runner. McCord delivered a sacrifice fly, followed by a Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) run-scoring single and Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the final run of the frame, one where the Miners brought 12 batters to the plate.

S&T wrapped up its scoring in the sixth when Torey Bohan (Bismarck, N.D./St. Mary's Central) doubled home Caffrey.

Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) was the recipient of the run support as he held the Hawks to a run and four singles over the first six innings, as his record improved to 2-1. Caffrey and Wobbe had three hits apiece in the Miners' 15-hit attack and Wobbe drove in three in the contest.

In the first game, Sappington shut down the Miners from the get-go, as S&T didn't get its first hit until the fourth and didn't have more than one runner on base in an inning until the final two of the contest.

In the meantime, the Hawks had four multiple-run innings against four Miner hurlers, beginning with a three-run third that was highlighted by a two-run homer by Ryan Porter. Rockhurst also scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the seventh as it outhit the Miners 14-4.

McCord had two of the Miner hits; Alex Dunn (Independence, Mo./Truman) took the loss on the mound for the Miners.

The Miners, 12-11 and 6-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will face the Hawks (10-12, 5-4 GLVC) in another doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
