SEARCY, Ark. -- Missouri S&T dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday to Harding, falling
5-3 and
7-5 as the Bisons completed a sweep of the three-game weekend set from the Miners.
S&T broke on top in the opening inning of game one, scoring an unearned run after a throwing error allowed
Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) -- who walked to start the game -- to advance to third. McCord scored when
Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) reached on a fielder's choice.
However, the Bisons scored twice in the bottom half of the first off S&T starter
Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell), then tacked on a run in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Miners tied the game in the sixth with a one-out rally that started with a walk to
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS).
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) followed with a hit to send Voth-Gaeddert to third, then
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) doubled down the line in left to cut the margin in half. Following a pitching change,
Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) bounced out to second to allow Caffrey to score the tying run.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Anthony Guglielmi greeted S&T reliever
Alex Dunn (Independence, Mo./Truman) with a leadoff homer on a full count pitch to put the Bisons back in front; Harding added another run in the eighth on an Erin McCarver home run for the final margin.
The Miners were outhit 9-5 in the first game as five different Miners got hits.
S&T also got a lead in the first inning of the nightcap as it scored three times. McCord tripled to open the contest and scored on a wild pitch, then
Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) followed with a home run to left to make it 2-0. The Miners got their third run of the inning when
Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) doubled and scored on a two-out hit by Voth-Gaeddert.
Harding answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and tied the score in the fifth, but the MIners regained the advantage in the sixth when Voth-Gaeddert got his second RBI hit of the contest, a double that brought home Pieper.
But in the bottom of the sixth, the Bisons broke loose loose for four runs -- two of which were unearned -- to retake the lead. S&T got one run back in the seventh on an RBI single by McCord and had the tying run at the plate with one out, but a ground out and a pop up ended the contest.
The Miners had seven hits in the nightcap, getting two apiece from McCord and Voth-Gaeddert.
Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) was tagged with the loss for S&T, now 4-5 on the season heading into a three-game series next weekend at King College in Bristol, Tenn.
