Completing the task: Bowe, Gronek go the distance as Miners sweep KWC

ROLLA, Mo. – A pair of complete game performances on the mound led Missouri S&T's baseball team to a doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon, as Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) threw a five-hitter to lead the Miners to a 2-1 win in the opener over Kentucky Wesleyan, followed by Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell)'s win in the 7-1 second game victory at the S&T Baseball Field.

The Miners spotted the Panthers a run in the opening inning of game one on Jordan White's RBI single, but got both of their runs to pull out the win in the fifth. Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) was hit by a pitch to open the inning, moved up on a one-out infield out and scored on a double by Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit).

Moments later, Brasher scored on a hit by Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) to put the Miners in front.

Bowe allowed three of the five hits in the first two innings, retiring 10 straight hitters in one stretch and 16 in a stretch of 17 batters. The Panthers did get the tying run on base in the eighth, but Bowe got White to line out to left and again in the ninth when Scott Woodburn singled with one out, but Bowe speared a line drive off the bat of Logan Neal and doubled Woodburn off first to end the game.

Brasher and McCord had two hits apiece for the Miners in the opener; S&T had five hits in game one. Bowe got his first victory on the mound and lowered his earned run average to 2.48 on the season.

S&T grabbed the early lead in the nightcap, as McCord led off the first with a hit and scored on a two-out single by Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic). The Miners added to their lead in the second by taking advantage of some sloppy defense by the Panthers – KWC committed three errors in the inning – to plate two more runs.

The inning began with a hit by Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS), who then stole second and advanced to third when the throw went into center field. Nick Burke (Good Hope, Ill./West Prairie HS) drove in Caffrey with a ground ball to short, but the throw to first was wild to allow Burke to reach second.

Brasher bunted to move Burke ahead, but the third baseman bobbled the ball to put runners on the corners with one out. McCord followed with an infield single on a ball hit between the mound and first, bringing Burke home with the second run of the inning.

S&T scored in five of the six innings it batted in the nightcap, adding a single run in the fourth on an RBI single by Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek), two in the fifth on a two-run homer by Carter and its final run in the sixth as a wild pitch which scored Brasher.

The Panthers (3-7, 0-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) got their only run off Gronek – an unearned tally -- in the fifth on an RBI single by Roman Ricker.

Gronek had an efficient 74-pitch outing in his seven-inning complete game, fanning two and allowing just seven hits to improve his mark to 3-0 on the year. McCord, Van Dyke, Pieper and Caffrey all had two hits for the Miners, who outhit the Panthers 11-7 in the second game.

Missouri S&T, 8-8 overall and 2-2 in GLVC play, will host Missouri Southern in a non-conference game Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the S&T Baseball Field.
