ROLLA, Mo. –
Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation time to extend Missouri S&T's final game and season, but the Miners were unable to grab a lead in overtime and fell in its season finale Saturday by a count of
71-64 to Missouri-St. Louis at Billy Key Court.
The Miners trailed 58-50 with 4:46 to play, but held the Tritons scoreless until regulation time expired. In the meantime, S&T got a three-pointer from
Carlton Westbrook (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) with 2:31 to go to cut a six-point lead in half, then after missing a three-pointer that could have tied with 52 seconds remaining, Foster drilled a three from in front of the Miner bench to knot the score and force overtime.
UMSL, however, got the lead back 1:11 into overtime on a lay-in by Gerald Fulton, then Fulton drained another jumper after an S&T turnover to make it a four-point game -- which would be as close as the Miners would get in the extra period.
The Miners did draw to within four after
Mike Malat (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) hit a three-pointer with 1:14 to go, but Fulton answered by hitting a shot just before the shot clock expired with 38 seconds remaining to get the lead back to six.
S&T trailed by as many as seven points in the first half, but outscored the Tritons 12-5 over a period of nine minutes to tie the contest and took the lead with 1:24 left on a free throw by
Maurice Grinter (Louisville, Ky./Fairdale). UMSL would regain the lead by scoring the first six points of the second half, but a 9-2 S&T spurt that followed put the Miners back in front, as Westbrook's two free throws at the 16:40 mark gave S&T a 33-31 lead.
After the game was tied two more times over the next 90 seconds, the Tritons moved back into the lead on a layup by Ryan Lawrence with 14:50 remaining. UMSL would stay in front and would extend its advantage to as much as eight at the 4:46 mark, but would not score again in regulation time to allow the Miners the chance to tie the contest.
The Miners had four players in double figures in their season finale, led by Westbrook with a season-high 17 points.
Maurice Grinter (Louisville, Ky./Fairdale) – one of three seniors playing their final game for S&T Saturday – finished with 16 points, while fellow senior Malat and
Tommy Pelczynski (Nashville, Ill./Nashville) had 10 points apiece.
Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) had nine points, ending a run of 10 consecutive games of scoring in double figures.
Fulton, who entered the game ranked second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring, had just two points at halftime. However, he poured in 17 in the second half and scored nine of UMSL's 13 points in overtime to finish with a game-high 28 points for the Tritons (16-10, 19-8 GLVC).
Missouri S&T finished the season at 7-18 overall and 3-15 in the GLVC.
