(Rolla, Mo.) – There was no need for late game heroics in Round 2 of the season series between Missouri S&T and Rockhurst as it dominated from start to finish in its 70-42 win over the Hawks on Thursday evening in Rolla.
In the first matchup of the season on January 4, S&T (19-6, 13-4 GLVC) withstood a late run by Rockhurst (4-21, 0-17) and got a steal on the game's final possession to escape Kansas City with a 52-51 win.
The Lady Miners set the tone early scoring the first five points in racing out to a 9-2 lead within the first four minutes. Valerie Zamora kept it close with a three at the 15:19 mark but that would be the closest the Hawks got the rest of the evening.
S&T blew the game open with a 14-1 run lasting nearly five minutes. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) started the run with the first of her four three's on the night. She finished the run with six points while Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) dropped in four and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) had two apiece.
Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) gave the Lady Miners their biggest lead of the half with a three at the 8:18 mark to make it 26-8. The lead stayed around that margin for the remainder of the half as S&T went into the intermission with a 39-21 advantage. Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) had a chance to make it a 21 point game but her shot from half-court rimmed out at the buzzer.
The Lady Miners shot 60 percent (12-for-20) from the floor, was 4-of-8 from downtown and 11-for-13 at the free throw line. S&T won the rebounding battle 16-12 and scored 11 points off the bench and had 16 points in the paint.
Meyer had 10 points to lead the Lady Miners. Knar and Parks had six points each.
Rockhurst was just 8-for-26 (31 percent) from the field, 1-of-8 from behind the arc and 4-for-7 at the line. Chrissy Sarcone and Zamora had seven points each.
S&T started the second half strong with a 13-2 spurt over the first seven minutes behind four points from Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) and three from Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City). The Lady Miner defense held the Hawks without a field goal for the first eight minutes.
The lead eventually grew to 31 points at the midway mark of the second half as S&T coasted the rest of the way and allowed their bench to play the final 10 minutes.
The Lady Miners cooled slightly in the second half making just 48 percent of their attempts but still managed to shot over 50 percent for the contest (25-of-47). They outrebounded Rockhurst 37-25 and dominated them in the paint scoring 32 points.
Meyer led three S&T players in double figures with 14 points. Knar had 12 and Parks dropped in 12.
The Hawks shot just 24 percent in the second frame and finished the game shooting 14-for-51 from the floor. Sarcone led Rockhurst with eight points and Zamora had seven.
The Lady Miners will look to clinch a share of the GLVC West Division title on Saturday night with a matchup against Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 5:30 p.m. A S&T win would give them their second 20-win season in the last four years.
