ROLLA, Mo. – For the second time in just over a week, Missouri S&T's men's basketball was done in by the three-point shooting of Newman as the Jets used the perimeter shot to post an
83-53 win over the Miners Saturday at Billy Key Court.
The Jets, who made 12 treys in their win over S&T last Friday in Wichita, went 16-of-34 from behind the arc Saturday.  The biggest beneficiary was guard Eric Saunders, who didn't make a three-pointer in last week's game but made five on Saturday as part of his game-high 23 points.
Newman scored 15 of its first 17 points Saturday via the long-range shot, jumping out to a 17-4 lead at the 12:43 mark after Connor Walker knocked down a three from the corner.  The Miners were able to cut the lead down to nine with just over nine minutes remaining in the half after
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) made one of two free throws, but the Jets pushed the lead back out to 14 and finished the opening 20 minutes with a 40-27 lead.
After S&T's
Tommy Pelczynski (Nashville, Ill./Nashville) hit two free throws in the opening minute of the second half to cut the lead to 11, the Jets outscored the Miners 24-5 over the next six minutes and hit six three-pointers during that stretch to break the contest open.
Newman finished the day shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and held S&T to just 32.1 percent on the other end.  The Miners made only three of their 16 attempts from three-point range -- all by
Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central), who led the Miners with 13 points.
Pelczynski finished with 10 points as did
Eli Steinbeck (Hermann, Mo./Hermann), who recorded his first double-figure game in a Miner uniform Saturday.
The Miners, now 0-4 on the season, will close their three-game homestand Tuesday when they host William Woods at 7 p.m.
