SOMERS, Wis. – Missouri S&T missed a chance to break back into the win column Thursday night, as 21 turnovers and the shooting of freshman guard Jordan Mach sent the Miners to a 63-57 defeat at Wisconsin-Parkside in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Miners overcame a 10-point deficit with 5:50 remaining in the second half – mainly created by Mach when he hit back-to-back three-pointers -- catching up by the 3:10 mark on the clock. However, the Miners gave up a three-point play to Tim Baines with 1:29 to go and were unable to secure a rebound of a Mach miss with 22 seconds left while trailing by two, allowing the Rangers to ice the victory in the final moments.
S&T and UW-Parkside played on even terms for much of the first half, with no team leading by more than five points at any time. The Rangers led by that five-point margin with 3:35 left in the half, but the Miners scored six of the final seven points of the half and tied the game on a lay-in by Carlton Westbrook (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) with 15 seconds to play, knotting the score at 23 as the teams went to the break.
The Miners regained the lead early in the second half on Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central)'s jumper, but UW-Parkside got a basket from Baines and a three-pointer from Mach to move back in front and never trailed again.
Filmore Bouldes (Romulus, Mich./Romulus)' layup at the 11:20 mark tied the game at 36 and S&T was still within three with 8:20 to go after Maurice Grinter (Louisville, Ky./Fairdale) hit a pair of free throws. A three-pointer by Leneal Harris started an 11-4 spurt that concluded with the back-to-back treys from Mach that gave the Rangers their largest lead of the night at 54-44 with 5:50 remaining.
Foster scored at the basket with 4:28 left to get the Miners going on a 10-0 run that allowed them to tie the contest. Westbrook followed with a three-pointer, then made a steal and lay-up to bring S&T to within three. With 3:10 left, Tommy Pelczynski (Nashville, Ill./Nashville) nailed a three to tie the game at 54; the game was tied again at 56 after Mach hit two free throws and Westbrook hit a jumper in the lane with 1:54 to play.
Moments later, Mach drove into the lane and dumped a pass off to Baines, who scored and completed a three-point play that put the Rangers back up by three. Westbrook made one of two at the line with 55 seconds to go to trim the margin to two, but on UW-Parkside's next possession, Mach missed a three with the shot clock running out and Harris grabbed the offensive rebound, forcing the Miners to foul.
Mach, who led all scorers with 23 points, hit two at the line with 15 seconds remaining, then Harris iced the game with a layup with two seconds to go.
The Miners shot 65 percent in the second half and finished the game at 51.4 percent after going just eight-of-21 from the floor in the first 20 minutes. S&T got 18 points from Foster, 13 from Westbrook and 12 from Grinter in the defeat that dropped it to 6-11 overall and 2-8 in the GLVC.
Sam Katula added 13 points and Baines had 11 for the Rangers (7-10, 4-6 GLVC).
The Miners will conclude their weekend road trip Saturday when they face Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., at 3 p.m.
