Lady Miners get pair of walk-off wins to sweep Drury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied from deficits in both games to win on walk-off hits in its sweep over Drury 2-1 in eight innings and 10-9 on Sunday afternoon in Rolla. With the wins S&T runs its winning streak to five games.

In the opener on Sunday, the Panthers (19-27, 9-10 GLVC) scored the game's first run in the third inning on an RBI double to left center by Sadie Ball scoring Jessica Matlock all the way from first. A wild pitch moved Ball to third with one out but Ashley Wallingford limited the damage getting back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.

The Lady Miners (23-17, 14-10) tied the game with one out in the fifth on a pinch hit home run by Kaylea Smith.

Drury had a chance to regain the lead in the sixth putting runners at second and third with two outs but Wallingford kept the game tied by getting a groundout to Becky Davis to end the threat. The Panthers had another chance in the seventh with runners at first and second and one out, but Taylor Keal got a force out at third and a ground out to first ending the inning.

S&T had a chance to win it in the seventh getting the winning run to second but couldn't get the two out hit.

Keal set Drury down in order in the top of the eighth then the Lady Miners won it in the home half of the eighth. Krista Porterfield got it started by singling through the left side. Lauren Briggs sacrificed her over to second. Jennifer Sardigal then ripped a smash off the third baseman's glove into left field putting runners on the corner with one out for Kristen Drage. Drage came through lifting a deep fly ball to center scoring Porterfield with the winning run.

S&T finished with seven hits in the contest led by Sardigal with two.

Wallingford went the first six innings allowing a run on three hits while striking out eight. She did however issue seven free passes. Keal tossed the final two innings allowing a hit, a walk and a strikeout to improve to 12-8 on the season.

The Panthers came out on fire in the first inning of game two sending 11 batters to the plate scoring six runs on six hits off of Keal. Briana Catanese came on in relief to get the final out of the inning.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Miners had long rally of their own. It started with Drage reaching on a bunt single to the catcher. After a groundout and a strikeout, Kaylea Smith, pinch hitting for Kate Runyan, worked a walk. Maggie Schroeder came off the bench to drive in S&T's first run hitting a line drive off the pitcher to score Drage.

Katie Smith kept the inning going with a single through the right side to drive in the second run. Porterfield then hit a deep drive to right that hit in the right fielder's glove and fell out for a two-run double. Briggs then singled to left center and advanced to second on a throw to the plate. With runners at second and third Sardigal singled to left scoring Porterfield and went to second on the throw to the plate. Drage tied the game with a single through the right side. With Kassi Deibert batting, Drage went to second on a wild pitch. Deibert drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Coley Naughton then came through with a two-run single to left center scoring Sardigal and Drage to give the Lady Miners an 8-6 lead. Runyan tried to add to it hitting drive to left that was run down by the left fielder to end the inning.

In the inning the Lady Miners scored eight times, all with two outs, on eight hits and sent 13 hitters to the plate.

Drury got one of those runs back in the fifth on an RBI single by Lori Amos and had a chance for more but left two on.

S&T responded back getting a lead-off home run from Davis in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead back to two at 9-7.

The Panthers tied it with two in the sixth and had runners at the corners with one out but Catanese got an inning ending double play ball to Porterfield to keep it tied.

The Lady Miners won it in the seventh getting a lead-off double to left center from Runyan that just missed leaving the park. Davis moved Runyan over to third with a groundout to the right side then Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) won it with a single to right center.

The S&T offense erupted for 14 hits in game two getting two apiece from Briggs, Drage, Naughton, and Porterfield. Naughton, Katie Smith (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) and Porterfield each drove in two runs.

Catanese pitched the final 6.1 allowing three runs on six hits and walked two earning her first win of the season. It was her longest outing of the season and matched her season total for innings pitched.

The Lady Miners return to action on Tuesday traveling to Bolivar, Mo., to take on former MIAA rival Southwest Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
