Eagles jump on Miners early to take first game of weekend set

4/16/2010 9:41:35 PM

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T had a rough opening to its four-game weekend series at Southern Indiana Friday night, falling 12-0 to the top team in both the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division and NCAA Division II Midwest Region.
USI, ranked 15th nationally, jumped on the Miners in the early going and went on to send S&T to its third shutout loss of the season.
The Miners averted a USI scoring threat in the first by getting an inning-ending double play, but were tagged for six runs in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth.
The big blow in the second was a three-run homer by Dylan Mooney, but seven of the first 11 Screaming Eagle runs were unearned thanks to three S&T errors in the early stages.
S&T's best scoring chances came in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, the Miners  had runners on second and third with one out, but the Eagles escaped the jam to keep the shutout intact.
The Miners loaded the bases in the eighth with one out with help from a USI error, but wasn't able to get a run across the plate on that opportunity. USI scored its 12th run of the night in the bottom half of that inning.
Southern Indiana (32-9, 18-3 GLVC) won for the 22nd time in its last 24 games while S&T dropped to 12-27 overall and 9-12 in the GLVC.
Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) had two of the Miners' six hits on the night. Freshman pitcher Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) was charged with the loss.
The Miners and Screaming Eagles will continue the series Saturday.
