ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team was unable to generate any timely hitting in the early stages Tuesday afternoon, while William Woods did so and came away with an
8-2 non-conference win over the Miners at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Owls jumped on top right out of the gate, as Merrick Conway led off the game with a double down the right field line and Ezra Dickerson followed with a two-run homer.
Miner starting pitcher
Nick Johnson (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) retired the next 10 batters after the Dickerson homer, but ran into trouble again in the fourth after getting the first hitter out. L.J. Watson drove in a run with a triple, then scored himself on a ground out to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
William Woods doubled its lead in the fifth as it strung together five hits and a sacrifice fly to score its four runs.
The Miners, who had 10 hits in the game but left 11 on base, finally broke the shutout in the eighth when
Matt Kempin (Wichita, Kan./Trinity Academy) led off the inning with his second home run of the season. Kempin also drove in the second run in the ninth when he brought in
Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara), who had singled with one out, with a two-out hit into right center.
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) had three hits for the Miners (12-26), while Kempin, Kerouac and
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) had two apiece. Johnson took the loss as he lasted 4 2/3 innings and struck out four.
Missouri S&T will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday when it opens a four-game series at GLVC West leader Southern Indiana.
