(Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped both ends of its softball doubleheader at Quincy
9-1 in five innings and
2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Quincy, Ill.
The Hawks (23-8, 13-3 GLVC) jumped out to an early lead scoring three times in the first inning on a lead-off home run and then a two-run homer four batters later. They added to their lead scoring an unearned run in the second before breaking it open with a four spot in the third. The big blow in the third was Megan Corey's three run homer to right center. For Corey it was her second roundtripper of the day as she also hit the two-run blast in the first.
S&T (18-16, 10-10 GLVC) got on the board with one out in the fourth on Kristen Drage's solo home run her fifth of the season.
Quincy ended the game in the fifth scoring another unearned run invoking the run rule.
Drage, Katie Smith and Becky Davis accounted for the Lady Miner offense with all three hits.
Corey led the Hawk offense going 3-for-3 with five batted in.
Ashley Wallingford allowed eight runs, five earned, on seven hits and walked a batter in just 2.2 to fall to 9-7 on the season. Briana Catanese finished the game allowing an unearned run on three hits.
In the second game the Hawks again jumped out to an early lead scoring in the first inning on a double down the right field line for the first run.
The S&T offense was never able to put together any serious scoring opportunities as Tori Bunzell held them hitless through the first three innings. The Lady Miners were able to scratch out some hits in the middle innings but never able to get a runner past second.
Quincy got an insurance run on a solo home run in the sixth.
Four different players had a hit for S&T in the second game.
Taylor Keal was the tough luck loser giving up both runs on three hits but walked a pair while striking out four to fall to 9-8.
The Lady Miners return home on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against former MIAA rival Central Missouri beginning at 2:30 p.m.
