S&T’s offense erupts in sweep at Saint Joseph’s 11-2, 8-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rensselaer, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners bats woke from a slight slumber pounding out 31 hits and scored 19 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep at Saint Joseph's 11-2 and 8-1 on Sunday.

In the opener of the twin bill the Lady Miners (12-8, 7-5 GLVC) rapped out a season-high 18 hits in an 11-2 win in six innings. S&T had six players with multi-hit games led by Lauren Briggs, Coley Naughton, Kate Runyan, and Jennifer Sardigal with three each.

The Lady Miners scored four times in the opening frame highlighted by Runyan's two-run double to right. They added another run in the second on Kristen Drage's RBI single which scored Briggs.

The Pumas (7-7, 0-2 GLVC) scored on an unearned run in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1.

It wouldn't matter though as S&T blew it open in the sixth scoring six times with Naughton hitting a grand slam to make it 10-1. Katie Smith concluded the scoring with a RBI double to center to drive in Runyan. S&T sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning and pounded out seven hits.

Saint Joseph's got another unearned run in the bottom half of the inning for the final tally of the game.

Ashley Wallingford won for the fifth time in her last six outings tossing a complete allowing two runs, both unearned, on hits while walking one and striking out five. Wallingford improved to 6-4 on the year.

In the nightcap, the Lady Miners again jumped out to an early lead scoring a pair of runs in the opening inning. Drage and Runyan each had RBI singles in the frame.

The Pumas got one back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single to right off the bat of Nicole Costello.

S&T widened the gap in the third scoring a pair of runs on a RBI double down the left field line by Kassi Deibert and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Runyan. The lead grew to 5-1 in the fourth on a groundout to second that allowed Briana Catanese to score.

The Lady Miners put the game away scoring three more in the sixth getting a RBI double from Sardigal and a RBI single by Jamie Hatlan.

S&T's offense pounded out 13 hits in game two led by Briggs, Drage and Deibert with two each.

After allowing the run in the first Taylor Keal shut the Saint Joseph offense down the rest of the way in picking up her sixth win of the season. She tossed a complete game allowing only six hits while striking out two and issued one free pass.

S&T is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday afternoon traveling up the road to Jefferson City to take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
