2/28/2010 5:44:05 PM

Box Score (Joplin, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dug themselves an early hole and were never able to recover in losing to Washburn 14-4 on Sunday morning in the final day of the MSSU/PSU Border Battle.

The Lady Blues (4-5) got on the board first with a run in the top of the first. They had a chance for more loading the bases with one out but Kristen Drage got a strikeout and a groundout to third to end the threat.

S&T (2-2) had a chance to answer in the bottom of the inning getting its lead-off hitter on but a double play ball to second ended the threat.

Washburn then erupted scoring 11 times in the next two innings. It scored six of those runs in the second inning getting three two-run scoring singles. The big blow in the third inning came off the bat of Jacque Horejsi who hit a grand slam to right field to make it 12-0.

The Lady Miners cut into the lead with three in the fourth. Drage got it going with a lead-off double to left center. Back-to-back walks to Kate Runyan and Kaylea Smith loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Kassi Deibert delivered a two run single through the right side scoring Drage and Runyan. Katie Smith followed with a RBI single down the left field line to score Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs).

S&T still had two on with one out but were unable to do further damage as back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

The Lady Blues added to their lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of solo home runs by Tish Williams and Alex Zordel.

The Lady Miners scored their final run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) scoring Maggie Schroeder from third.

S&T's offense recorded only six hits in the contest as six different players had a hit.

Washburn finished the contest with 12 hits led by Lindsey Himpel and Zordel with three apiece.

Drage pitched the first 2.2 innings allowing 12 runs on eight hits, walked five and struck out two. Briana Catanese threw the final 2.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits and struck out three.

S&T was scheduled to play another game on Sunday against Nebraska-Omaha, but that game was called after the second inning because of unplayable field conditions.

The Lady Miners return to action this weekend when they open Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday afternoon against Southern Indiana beginning at 12 p.m.
