ROLLA, Mo. – Back in game competition for the first time in 18 days, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team held Culver-Stockton to one field goal in the first 11:44 of play and led from start to finish in a
91-56 romp over the Wildcats Wednesday at Billy Key Court.
The victory improved the Miners to 6-3 on the season as they prepare to resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend with the start of a five-game stretch away from home. The first of those games takes place Sunday against a much improved Missouri-St. Louis team at 3 p.m.
Carlton Westbrook (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) hit a three-pointer 21 seconds into the game to get the Miners rolling, as S&T scored the first nine points of the contest and 17 of the first 20. The Wildcats got their first field goal at the 15:31 mark, after S&T had already built a 10-point lead, then didn't score again from the floor until 8:16 remained in the first half with S&T holding a 30-6 advantage.
Missouri S&T connected on 61.3 percent of its shots in the first half, with
Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) scoring 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first 20 minutes. S&T carried a 26-point lead into the locker room after an emphatic dunk at the buzzer by
Jeremy DeLange (Viera, Fla./Comenius College HS) and led by as many as 38 points in the second half.
Foster led a six-player contingent in double figures for the Miners, as DeLange and
Tommy Pelczynski (Nashville, Ill./Nashville) finished with 13 points apiece.
Maurice Grinter (Louisville, Ky./Fairdale),
Mike Malat (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) and
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) all had 10 points each in a game that the Miners dominated on the stat sheet as well as on the scoreboard.
S&T shot 55.8 percent on the evening while the Wildcats finished at 39.5 percent. The Miners also had a 36-22 advantage on the boards and forced 15 Culver-Stockton turnovers while committing only eight. In addition, S&T went to the free throw line 34 times in a foul-filled contest and made 30 of those attempts.
Nick O'Brien was the only Culver-Stockton player in double figures with 15 points.
