(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped its two game skid getting with a complete team effort in its 79-52 win over Westminster on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T shot a season-high 54 percent and dominated in every facet of the game.
The Lady Miners (3-2) fell behind by a pair in the first five minutes but quickly got it going with a 17-6 run to build a 21-12 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) and D'Naya Mims keyed the run scoring nine of the 17 points. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) also had four points during that stretch.
The Blue Jays (2-3) pulled to within 21-15 on a three by Heather Letourneau with 9:32 to play. That would be the closest they got the rest of the game as S&T broke the game open with a 14-1 run over the next seven minutes to grab a 19 point lead. Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) had six points in the game deciding run. The Lady Miner defense did its part over the final nine minutes holding Westminster to just one field goal the rest of the half.
S&T connected on 50 percent (16-for-32) of its field goal attempts. The Lady Miners dominated the paint scoring 26 points down low and scored 12 points off the break. They also turned 14 Blue Jay turnovers into 12 points. Washington had seven to lead S&T while Mims and Sample had six apiece.
Westminster made only 7-of-22 (32 percent) from the floor in the opening frame and were led in scoring by Letourneau with seven and Kenna Cornelson with six.
The Lady Miners slowly began to pull away at the start of the second half and eventually built its lead to 30 points at the midway point of the second half. They built their lead to 75-40 on a lay-up by Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) with 4:15 to play. It was their biggest lead of the game.
The Blue Jays ran off seven straight to get it under 30 but Sample hit a jumper on the baseline to push it back to 30. Westminster scored five of the game's final seven points including a lay-up at the buzzer for the final margin.
S&T missed only 12 shots in the second half shooting 59 percent and had 26 rebounds. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) hit four three's in the second stanza to finish with 12 in the frame.
The Lady Miners were 33-of-61 from the floor and dominated the glass grabbing 46 rebounds to just 32 for Westminster. S&T had four players in double figures led by Mims and Knar with 14 apiece. Sample and Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) had 10 each. Mims had eight rebounds for the Lady Miners
The Blue Jays shot 31 percent (17-for-55) from the floor and were 13-for-22 from the charity stripe. Letourneau had 10 for Westminster. Rachel Backes had nine while Cornelson had eight.
S&T continues its five-game home stand on Thursday night opening GLVC play against Quincy starting at 5:30 p.m.
