Second half run dooms Lady Miners in 70-55 loss at William Jewell

(Liberty, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were outscored 25-10 down the stretch in its 70-55 loss at William Jewell on Tuesday night. The Lady Miner defense had no answer for Jewell's Holly Switzer as she scored 21 points in the second half.

WJC (4-3) scored the first four points of the game before S&T (2-2) answered back to tie the game. The teams traded baskets before the Lady Miners took the lead on a lay-in by Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). The Cardinals regained the lead and continued to hold the lead until the final few minutes of the frame. S&T was able to turn up the tempo going on a 10-0 run to gain its biggest lead of the night at 29-23.

William Jewell had the answer though getting a fast break lay-up and an old-fashioned three-point play right before the break pulled the Cardinals within 29-28.

Each team shot the ball well in the opening frame as WJC connected on 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from the floor while the Lady Miners were 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from the field. Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) led S&T with eight points while Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) chipped in seven and Meyer added six.

Cassy Nicolay led the Cardinals with nine points while Jessie Wheeler had five and Sierra Howard and Switzer had four each.

Jewell got out to a great start in the second half scoring the first couple of buckets to regain a lead it wouldn't relinquish. S&T hung close and had several opportunities to retake the lead but couldn't get the big bucket when it needed it.

It seemed throughout the second half that every loose ball bounced in favor of William Jewell and every time it was able to knock down a big shot.

The Cardinals shot 56 percent (14-for-25) from the floor and were 4-of-10 from behind the arc. Switzer was 7-for-10 from the floor, 3-of-6 from three and 4-for-4 at the foul line. Chelsea Meeks was 3-for-4 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe in the second half with 10 points.

The Lady Miners made 12-of-28 (43 percent) from the field in the second half but were 1-of-5 from three and only went to the foul twice in the stanza. Meyer was 6-for-10 from the floor in the second half for 12 points.

S&T shot 45.1 percent for the game and outrebounded William Jewell 23-to-21. The Lady Miners turned the ball over 18 times compared to 16 for WJC.

Switzer led the Cardinals with 25 points. Meeks had 12 while Nicolay dropped in 11. WJC shot 56.5 percent from the floor and were 93 percent at the foul line for the game.

S&T returns home on Saturday to take on Westminster College beginning at 1 p.m.
