Lady Miners use strong second half performance to rally past Fontbonne 65-52

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners overcame a sluggish first half using a strong second half performance to rally past Fontbonne 65-52 on Saturday evening in Rolla.

S&T (2-0) started the game ice cold making just one of its first 11 shots and fell behind by eight points eight minutes into the contest. The Lady Miners closed to within three four different times in the opening frame but each time the Griffins had an answer each time extending their lead back to seven.

Trailing 29-22 with 1:20 to play in the frame S&T closed the half strong scoring the final five points including a three at the buzzer by Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) to head into the locker room down by two.

Each team made 10 field goals in the opening frame but it was Fontbonne who had the edge shooting the ball 41.7 percent-to-33.3 percent. The Griffins had a 20-to-17 edge on the glass and outscored the Lady Miners 16-to-12 in the paint and 6-to-1 in second chance points.

Leola Hubbard led all scorers with nine points while Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) had six to lead S&T.

Fontbonne scored the first four points of the second half pushing its lead back to six 1:20 into the frame. That's when the Lady Miners began to turn up the heat on both ends of the floor going on an 11-0 run to regain the lead for good. Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) got the run going with a jumper then Yael Pelleg (Rishon Lezion, Israel/) gave S&T its first lead since early in the contest with a three from the corner to make it 36-33 at the 13:59 mark.

The Griffins closed to within two but got no closer as the Lady Miners slowly pulled away over the next four minutes building a 51-41 lead on a jumper by Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton).

Fontbonne cut the lead to 52-46 on a three by Hubbard, but S&T put the game away with eight straight points including back-to-back buckets by Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) to stretch the lead to 60-46 with 4:33 remaining.

The Lady Miners were able to match the Griffins point for point over the final four minutes in picking up the 65-52 win.

S&T held Fontbonne to just 29 percent (8-for-27) shooting in the second while the Lady Miners connected on 13 of its 29 attempts (45 percent) and dominated the glass outrebounding the Griffins by a 26-to-9 margin

S&T finished the contest shooting 39 percent (23-of-59) from the floor and was only 4-for-19 from three. The Lady Miners finished the contest with a 43-to-29 advantage on the glass.

Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) led S&T with nine points while Washington, Pelleg and Parks had eight apiece.

Fontbonne shot 35 percent (18-of-51) from the floor and was 4-for-17 from downtown.

Hubbard led all scorers with 14 points while Shelby Ellison had 10.

The Lady Miners return to action on Thursday, November 18, hosting Nebraska-Omaha at 5:30 p.m., at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
