Miner football team unable to keep pace with South Alabama

10/9/2010 8:17:44 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – Missouri S&T was able to take advantage of a turnover to score a go-ahead touchdown early in Saturday's game at South Alabama, but the Jaguars kept the Miners off the scoreboard for the remainder of the afternoon as they claimed a 45-6 win over S&T.
After punting on their first possession of the day, S&T defensive end Freddy Dugard (Queens Village, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) forced a fumble by USA quarterback Brennan Sim that Terry Robinson (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South-Berkeley) recovered on the Jaguars' 26-yard line. Four plays later, Chad Shockley (St. James, Mo./John F. Hodge) caught a pass for a first down, then on the next play caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Steve Watson (Berkeley, Ill./Walther Lutheran) to put S&T ahead 6-3.
The Miner touchdown marked only the third time in the two-year history of the South Alabama football program that the Jaguars had found themselves behind on the scoreboard. However, the Miner lead would be a short-lived one as the hosts came right back with a five-play scoring drive of their own, capped by a 14-yard touchdown run by Brandon Ross.
South Alabama's defense forced a turnover that created points on the next Miner possession, as Enrique Williams forced Watson to fumble as he was rolling out of the pocket and the loose ball was picked up and ran eight yards into the end zone by Randon Carnathan to extend the Jaguar lead to 17-6.
South Alabama added two more scores in a span of a little over three minutes in the second quarter on touchdown runs of 11 and three yards by Kendall Houston.
The Miners did move deep into Jaguar territory late in the first half, moving to the 15-yard line on a completion from Watson to Shockley. S&T lined up for a field goal attempt with just over a minute to go in the half, but instead tried a fake field goal that came up short of a first down.
USA scored two second half touchdowns on short fields, one on a drive that started at the S&T 19 after a punt return and an ensuing penalty -- Myles Gibbon scored on a one-yard run – and the other on a Santuan McGee seven-yard touchdown to conclude a drive which started on the Miners' 16-yard line.
The Miners were held to 154 yards of total offense in the contest while South Alabama finished with 369. Watson completed 12-of-22 passes in the game for 83 yards, with Shockley catching five passes for 55 yards and the one score. Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) had 36 yards on the ground to lead the Miners in that department.
Terry Robinson (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South-Berkeley) had a team-high seven tackles on defense for S&T, while Edwin Scott (Alpadena, Calif./LaSalle), Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) and Nick Williams (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) all had five stops apiece. Dugard recorded the Miners' only sack of the day.
Missouri S&T, now 1-5 on the season, will host Kentucky Wesleyan on Hall of Fame Day at S&T next Saturday. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
