(Rolla, Mo.) – Melissa Young's goal about midway through the first half proved to be the difference as the Missouri S&T Lady Miners held tough for a 1-0 win over Indianapolis on Sunday in the regular season finale. With the win S&T secured the sixth seed in next week's GLVC Tournament and will play at Quincy who's the third seed.
The Lady Miners (8-6, 8-6 GLVC) controlled play for the first 24 minutes taking four shots, three on goal while holding the Greyhound (4-10-2, 4-8-2 GLVC) offense without a shot.
Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) set-up Young's goal with a cross from the far side of the field right into the middle of the box. Young was able to get her foot on it in a crowd and redirect into a wide open goal for her third of the weekend and season.
The 'Hounds responded by getting off a flurry of shots in the next 1:30 but Stacey Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant ) stood her ground turning all three shots away.
Indianapolis had another chance nearly three minutes later but was denied again by Luquette.
S&T's defense also blocked a shot in the stanza.
The Lady Miners outshot the Greyhounds 8-6, 5-4 in shots on goal.
The second half was played in the midfield for the most part with neither side having a lot of great scoring chances.
UIndy had some chances early but after that S&T's defense clamped down and did not allow a shot in the final 34 minutes.
The Lady Miners tried to add to their lead a couple of times late in the game but were turned away by the Greyhound's Shae Morris with a pair of saves.
S&T finished the game outshooting the 'Hounds by a 12-9 margin and 7-5 in shots on goal.
