COLUMBIA, Mo. – The 2010-11 swimming season got underway for Missouri S&T Saturday as it placed fourth in the Show-Me Showdown at the University of Missouri in a meet featuring several of the top swimming programs in the state of Missouri.
Junior
Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) reached a provisional cut time for the Miners in the meet both on an individual basis and as part of the Miners' 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished third Saturday. He anchored a quartet that included
Sean Deegan (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill),
Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) and
Hamilton Vernon (Omaha, Neb./Burke) that posted a time of 1:26.29 to reach the NCAA B-cut in the event.
Schranck later posted a fourth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.27 seconds to make the B-cut in that event, and took fifth in the 50-yard butterfly in 23.48 seconds as well.
Deegan also added a sixth place showing in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.53 seconds, 50-yard freestyle in 21.82 seconds and an eighth in the 100-backstroke in 54.03, one place behind teammate
Jeff Enge (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) who had a time of 53.72 seconds.
Danny Murphy (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) also had a sixth place showing in the 500-freestyle in 4:49.19, while
Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) was seventh in 4:52.07.
Enge placed seventh as well in the 50-yard backstroke in 25.18 seconds and 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.35, while
Zlatan Hamzic (Panceva, Serbia/Uros Predic) had a seventh place effort in the 50-yard breaststroke in 28.16 seconds. Vernon tied for eighth in the 50-freestyle with a mark of 22.09 seconds.
Zach Lemons (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) was ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.47 as was Deegan in the 50-yard backstroke in 25.31 seconds.
Hamzic placed 11
th in the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.85 as was Schranck in the 200-IM in 1:59.91, while freshman
Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) was 12
th in the 100-butterfly in 53.18 seconds along with Murphy in the 200-IM in 2:00.97.
The Miners' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Deegan, Enge, Schranck and Vernon finished in fourth place with a time of 3:11.27, while the 200-yard medley relay team of Deegan, Hamzic, Schranck and Vernon took fifth in 1:37.22. S&T's 400-yard medley relay team that consisted of Enge, Hamzic, Schranck and Deegan ended up in sixth place with a time of 3:33.41.
The host Tigers won the meet with a total of 670.5 points, while Drury came in second and Lindenwood in third. S&T finished with 422 points.
Missouri S&T's next competition will take place Oct. 15 and 16 when it takes on Ouachita Baptist in a pair of dual meets in Arkadelphia, Ark.
