ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's hopes of winning its Homecoming game for the fifth straight year were dashed by Northwestern Oklahoma State and running back Nate Guillory, as the Rangers routed the Miners
43-14 Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium despite another big game from S&T wide receiver
Chad Shockley (St. James, Mo./John F. Hodge).
Shockley had 12 catches for 185 yards Saturday and scored both Miner touchdowns, becoming only the second player in school history to reach the 2,000-yard mark in receptions in the process. However, Shockley's efforts were trumped by five S&T turnovers and the running of Guillory, who ran for 224 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of long scoring runs in the second half to stem any hopes of a Miner rally.
The struggles for the Miners started during the Rangers' opening possession. S&T forced NWOSU into a punting situation, but was called for running into the punter to allow the Rangers to keep possession with a first down. With the new life, the Rangers got on the scoreboard moments later by executing a double pass as Korey Williams threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Mike Frame to go on top.
Jared Jackson extended the lead on the Rangers' next trip down the field as he scored on a five-yard run, then Guillory scored the first of his three touchdowns early in the second quarter on a dive into the end zone to give Northwestern Oklahoma a 20-0 lead.
Missouri S&T got its first points of the day at the 10:11 mark of the second quarter as
Steve Watson (Berkeley, Ill./Walther Lutheran) connected with Shockley on a 45-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 20-7. The Rangers answered right back, driving 57 yards and getting into the end zone when Williams caught a seven-yard scoring pass from Kyle Jech.
The Miners tried to get closer as the half was coming to an end, reaching the Rangers' two-yard line in the final seconds thanks to a pass interference call. S&T took two cracks at the end zone, with both passes falling incomplete as time ran out.
Northwestern added to its lead right off the bat in the second half, as Guillory tried to sweep to the right, then reversed field and dashed 73 yards for a score on the first play to make it 34-7. S&T was able to draw back to within 20 at 34-14 when Watson hit Shockley for a seven-yard scoring pass late in the third quarter, but an interception off a deflected pass on the Miners' next possession after driving into Ranger territory was followed by a 63-yard scoring run by Guillory.
The Miners finished the afternoon with 313 yards of total offense, as Watson completed 21-of-39 passes for 254 yards and the two scores. With his 12 receptions, Shockley ended the day with 155 receptions, tying him for third all-time at S&T, and 2,055 receiving yards. A week after posting the third-best day of receiving in Miner history with 199 yards against Wisconsin-LaCrosse, Shockley recorded the seventh-best single game mark with his performance Saturday.
Northwestern Oklahoma State finished with 460 yards of offense, 311 of which came on the ground.
The Miners, 1-4 on the season, will take a step up in competition next weekend as they travel to Mobile, Ala., to face the University of South Alabama – an NCAA Division I opponent in the Football Championship Subdivision – at 4 p.m.
