(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners picked up one of its biggest wins in program history by upsetting the 15
th ranked Drury Panthers
1-0 on Friday evening at the S&T Soccer Field. It was S&T's first victory over a ranked team since beating Northern Kentucky 5-3 on August 27, 2001.
“Wow, what an exciting game,” Missouri S&T Head Coach Jon Kiester said. “It was definitely a great win for our program. The girls have been working really hard and it was good for them to get a result to show for all of their hard work. I thought we did a great job battling for everything. It was one of the keys we talked about before the game that we've got to compete for everything.”
The Lady Miners (3-4-1, 3-3 GLVC) dominated play for a majority of the first half and probably would have had a couple of goals early on if it wasn't for some great saves by Drury's (7-2, 4-1 GLVC) Jessie Sanderson to keep the game scoreless. S&T got on the board in the 21st minute when Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) trailed on a play and knocked in a loose ball from 20 yards out off a kick back from Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East).
“That goal was great work by our forwards, in fact I think all three forwards touched the ball on that play,” Kiester said. “It was something we said at the beginning that we've got to challenge their keeper. Leah Williams did a great job putting it in the box for Brooke and she did a great job of challenging the keeper and Mel was right there to clean up the mess.”
S&T finished the first half outshooting the Panthers 10-6 and in shots on goal 6-4. It also had the edge in corner kicks with a 3-1 advantage.
In the second half Drury came out and put pressure on the Lady Miners early on but couldn't find the back of the net for the equalizer. There were two key moments in the second stanza as Catherine Swift (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) came up with two huge saves to keep S&T in front. The first came in the 68th minute when she stopped Katie Pritchard on a breakaway then she saved a penalty kick by Nicole Williams going to her left in the 76th minute.
Swift finished the night with 10 saves, seven in the second half, earning some praise from her head coach.
“Wow, she had the game of her life,” Kiester said. “She's really picked up her game this year. It's something we've been working towards the last couple of years and for her to come out and perform like she did tonight, a lot of the credit goes to here.”
The Lady Miners also did a great job on the defensive side of the ball battling the Panthers for the entire 90 minutes and never let up despite being outshot by Drury 17-16 for the contest and 11-9 in the second half. The Panthers put seven shots on goal in the second half against three for S&T.
“They threw everything at us in the second half and we did a good job of keeping them in front of us and battling for everything,” he said.
The Lady Miners return to action next Friday evening when they host Maryville University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up beginning at 5 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
