(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners fell in the closing minutes of double overtime
2-1 at Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo.
The Lady Miners (2-4-1, 2-3 GLVC) outshot the Hawks (3-3, 2-2 GLVC) 7-4, four of which were on goal in a scoreless first half. During one stretch late in the stanza S&T rattled off four straight shots in about a five minute stretch, but three saves by Rockhurst's keeper kept the game scoreless into the intermission.
The Hawks scored the first goal of the contest on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute by Haley Long. The Lady Miners responded though just eight and a half minutes later when Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) scored her third goal of the season on a penalty kick of her own knotting the game at 1-1. S&T had a couple of more opportunities right after Young's goal on shots by Melia Miller (Richardson, Texas/J.J. Pearce) and Morgan Lockowitz (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin ) but were unable to get them past the keeper.
Catherine Swift (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) made a big save with just over 20 minutes left to keep the game tied at 1. The Lady Miners had a couple more attempts in the final 10-plus minutes of regulation on shots by Young and Brooke Ryan (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) but weren't able to put them into the net forcing overtime.
S&T caught a break late in the first overtime when a Rockhurst shot hit the post with under two minutes remaining in the period. The Hawks kept the pressure on in the second overtime putting a shot on goal in the first minute but a team save by the Lady Miners kept it tied. Lockowitz had a chance for the game winner in the 107th minute but her shot went wide left.
Rockhurst scored the game winner in the 109th minute on a shot from 10 yards just inside the right post by Long.
Young led the S&T offense with four shots, three on goal, while Ryan and Lockowitz tallied three and two shots respectively. The Lady Miners finished the contest being outshot by the Hawks 15-14, but had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Swift made two saves in goal.
S&T returns home for a match Friday evening against Drury University beginning at 5 p.m., at the S&T Soccer Field.
