(Springfield, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners bounced back from a tough five set loss on Friday evening at Quincy to split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Illinois-Springfield Triangular. S&T defeated Illinois-Springfield
3-1 (21-25, 25-11, 25-18 and 25-16) in the opener then dropped a
3-1 (22-25, 24-18, 21-25 and 22-25) decision to Christian Brothers.
The Lady Miners (4-13, 1-1 GLVC) fell behind early as Illinois-Springfield (6-7, 0-2 GLVC) got off to a hot start recording 13 kills in the first set. S&T responded though with convincing wins in the next three sets to take the match. The Lady Miner offense warmed up after a slow start to finish the match hitting .138 (36k/20e/116ta). They finished the match with 6.5 total blocks and eight service aces.
Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) had 10 kills to lead S&T. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) finished with nine and seven kills respectively. Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) led the way with 15 set assists while Meyer was the leader on the defensive side of the ball with 14 digs.
In the second match against Christian Brothers (10-6) the Lady Miners again fell into an early hole by losing the first set. They played well on the offensive side of the ball recording 16 kills in 39 total chances, but were unable to slow down the Buccaneer offense as they had 14 kills in the set.
The second set was tight until midway through when S&T went on a long run taking its biggest lead of the match at 18-11. CBU would get within 20-17 before the Lady Miners pulled away late scoring five of the final six points to square the match at 1-1.
S&T trailed for a majority of the third game but were able to get within a couple of points late in the set, but the Lady Miners were unable to get over the hump as the Bucs held on for the 25-21 win.
The fourth and final set was tight early until Christian Brothers broke open an 8-8 tie by scoring six of the next seven points. S&T cut the lead to three points on three different occasions, but the Buccaneers had an answer each time eventually building the lead to 21-14. The Lady Miners refused to go quietly though as they scrapped their way back to within two at 22-20 and 24-22 but were unable to force the fifth and deciding set as CBU held on 25-22.
Meyer had a match-high 18 kills for S&T. Klump and Bekebrede had nine and eight kills respectively. Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had a match-high 19 digs.
The Lady Miners return home to begin a three match home stand starting with Columbia College on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
