(Waynesville, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners bid for another upset over a top 25 team was stymied by 15
th ranked Northern Kentucky
3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Slaughter Field, in Waynesville, Mo. The game was moved to Waynesville's high school field after S&T's field was unplayable due to wet grounds.
The Lady Miners (5-7-1, 5-6 GLVC) controlled play on NKU's side of the field for nearly the first 20 minutes of the contest but got nothing to show for it. The Norse (13-2, 10-2 GLVC) controlled the tempo for nearly the last 25 minutes and got on the board first with a goal by Kelly Sullivan in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
NKU finished the frame outshooting S&T by an 8-2 count and 4-1 in shots on goal. The Norse had one more corner than the Lady Miners did as well.
Brooke Ryan had a golden opportunity to tie the game only six minutes into the second half when she tried to go far post into an open net but pushed her shot wide to the right to keep it 1-0. Northern Kentucky extended its lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute on a goal by Emily Martin off a feed from Amanda Mason and Sullivan.
The Lady Miners cut the deficit to 2-1 with 19 minutes left to play when Ryan blasted a rocket into the goal for her fourth of the season. S&T kept the pressure onin the final minutes looking for the equalizer and had several good looks but were unable to get one past NKU's Rachael Wood. The best chance came with about three minutes to play when Melissa Young rifled one from outside the box that stuck right in Wood's belly.
The Lady Miners sent all their players forward in the final minute to try and get the tying goal and Northern Kentucky took advantage with an odd man rush scoring the final goal with 0:37 left in the game to close it out.
The Norse finished the contest outshooting S&T by a 20-8 margin including 11-4 in shots on goal. Catherine Swift and Kelsey Kurilla combined to make eight saves for the Lady Miners.
Ryan and Morgan Lockowitz each had two shots to lead the S&T offense.
S&T returns to action on Friday evening when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on the Greyhounds of Indianapolis beginning at 4 p.m. (CST).
