(Owensboro, Ky.) – The Missouri S&T kept their GLVC playoff hopes alive by picking up an important
3-1 road victory at Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in Owensboro, Ky. S&T remains tied with Southern Indiana for the final playoff spot heading into the last two weeks of the regular season.
The Lady Miners (5-6-1, 5-5 GLVC) dominated the opening 45 minutes outshooting the Panthers (6-8-1, 3-8 GLVC) 18-3 and put 11 of those shots on goal compared to just one for KWC.
S&T got on the board with just over 15 minutes to play in the half on Melia Miller's third goal of the season off a pass from Brooke Ryan. The lead grew to 2-0 almost five minutes later when Melissa Young found the back of the net for her team-leading fifth goal off a feed from Valerie Crews. The Lady Miners got their final tally in the 43rd minute on Hillary Griffith's first goal of the season with an assist from Paige Smothers.
S&T could have had a bigger halftime advantage if not for the play of Kentucky Wesleyan's Alanna Miller who made eight saves in the half.
The Panthers scored an unassisted goal by Katie Allen 3:30 into the second half to cut the deficit to 3-1 but the Lady Miner defense slammed the door the rest of the way as Stacey Luquette stopped three shots in the frame to secure the victory.
S&T doubled up KWC in shots 24-12 and had 13 on goal against just five for the Panthers. Ryan, Miller, Young and Morgan Lockowitz combined for 17 of the Lady Miner shots and 11 of the shots on goal.
Luquette finished the contest making three saves.
S&T returns home for its final home stand of the season beginning this Friday night against Bellarmine University at 7:30 p.m., at the S&T Soccer Field.
