ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T's struggles for points early in Thursday's game at Lewis proved to be costly, as the Flyers held the Miners to 17 points in first 20 minutes and went on to a
73-50 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
S&T held a 5-4 lead at the first media timeout, which came after a jumper by
Curtis Mosley (Chicago, Ill./) with 16:20 to go in the half. However, the Miners didn't score again for the next five minutes, during which time Lewis ran off 11 straight points to build a 10-point lead.
Justin Taylor's layup ended the Miners' scoring drought, but the Flyers spent the remainder of the half warming up from three-point range to put S&T in a deeper hole. Lewis went 7-of-16 from beyond the arc in the opening half with Jason Genova doing most of the damage.
Genova hit four threes in the opening half and had 16 points as the Flyers took a 34-17 advantage to the locker room.
The Miners were able to trim the deficit to 11 after a three-pointer by
Marquis Jones (St. Louis, Mo./Cardinal Ritter) early in the second half, but the Flyers regained control of the contest shortly thereafter, pushing the lead to 20 on Genova's fifth trey of the contest at the 15:12 mark.
The closest the Miners would get in the second half was 17.
Taylor led the Miners with 14 points while Jones finished with 12. S&T shot only 38.8 percent for the night and made just three of its 11 three-point attempts. Genova led all scorers in the game with 21 points.
S&T (5-7, 0-4 GLVC) will play at Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at 3 p.m.
