Lady Miners break two game skid, with shutout win at Lewis, 2-0

Box Score Romeoville, Ill. - After a scoreless opening half in a pretty even match, the Missouri S&T Lady Miners dominated the second half getting two goals early in the second half to defeat Lewis, 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill. With the win S&T snapped its two game losing streak and stayed in the hunt for a spot in the conference tournament. The Lady Miners are currently a game out of the eighth and final spot with three conference games to play.

Each side was able to muster two shots in the opening frame, but both of the Lady Miner (6-6-1, 3-5-1 GLVC) shots were saved by the Flyers (5-7, 3-4 GLVC) Megan George. The two sides combined for 10 fouls in the frame while S&T recorded two corner kicks.

The second half was a different story with the Lady Miners charging out of the gates registering three corner kicks in the first two minutes before Sabrina Drennan (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) headed one in off the third corner from Paige Smothers (Marion, Ill./Marion) for her third goal of the season. S&T continued the attack nearly adding another goal three minutes later but Valerie Crews (Washington, Mo./) was turned away. Crews wouldn't be denied though getting another chance almost six minutes later putting in her own rebound off a deflection to make it 2-0.

S&T continued to control the action over the next 15 minutes getting off three more shots but George kept the Flyers in the contest making a pair of saves.

Lewis had a chance to cut the lead in half on a penalty kick in the 84th minute but Stacey Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant ) came up with a huge save to keep the game 2-0. The Flyers made one final push in the last five minutes getting two shots off one of which was wide right and the other was saved by Luquette to preserve the shutout.

The Lady Miners finished the match out shooting Lewis by a slight 10-9 margin but had nine shots on goal to just two for the Flyers. Crews finished with four shots, all on goal, to lead S&T while Luquette and Kelsey Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) combined to record the Lady Miners first shutout of the season and the first since a 2-0 win over Missouri Baptist Oct. 26th of last year.
