ROLLA, Mo. — Missouri S&T men's soccer scored twice in the final six minutes to pull away from Illinois Springfield 4-2 Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, giving the Miners their fifth win of the season.
Illinois Springfield struck first in the 11th minute when Carter Downen found the back of the net to put the Prairie Stars ahead 1-0. Missouri S&T answered five minutes later when
Camron Hatamkhani (Newport Beach, CA/Corona del Mar) scored to even the match at 1-1.
The Miners took their first lead in the 29th minute when
Mike Banasik (Hjoerring, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) scored off an assist from
Ian Conner (Las Vegas, NV/Northwest Career & Technical Academy). Illinois Springfield responded just before halftime, as Gentil Selemani scored in the 44th minute to send the teams into the break tied 2-2.
Missouri S&T regained the lead in the 85th minute when
Juliano Costa (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Marista Rosario) scored off an assist from
Jake Salazar-Blair (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista). The Miners then added an insurance goal in the 90th minute when
Kellen Douglas (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh) found the net to make it 4-2.
Missouri S&T controlled the offensive action throughout the match, finishing with 28 shots, including 15 on goal, compared with 11 shots and five on target for Illinois Springfield. The Miners also held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano) made three saves in goal for Missouri S&T, while Illinois Springfield goalkeeper Joe Brudnak recorded 11 saves.
With the victory, Missouri S&T improves to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Illinois Springfield falls to 0-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference action.
What's Next
The Miners will travel to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
