CHESTERFIELD, Mo. -- Missouri S&T Men's Volleyball is headed to the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men's Volleyball Championship this week. Their first match will be a semifinal contest against #2-seed Rockhurst University at 6pm on Saturday, April 25th. The tournament will take place at Moloney Arena on the campus of Maryville University.
About the Miners
S&T enters the GLVC championship as the #3-seed after a 17-6 regular season where they went 11-3 in-conference. The Miners have won a match against every team at the GLVC tournament, including a five-set victory over semifinal opponent Rockhurst.
The Miners' offensive has dominated the GLVC's statistical leaderboards this season, ranking first in assists per set, kills per set, and hitting percentage, including a .350 mark in the latter that ranks them 5th in the nation.
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) continues to rank third in the country for assists per set, averaging 10.54, while
Nate Meyer's (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) 3.71 kills per game are 14th.
The front line has continued to improve in the final weeks of the regular season, with the Miners averaging over 2.7 blocks per set in the final three matches of the regular season. They rank #27 in the nation with 2.132 blocks per set, led by
Caleb Rohlwing's (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) .976 per set. Meanwhile,
Bartosz Chmielewski (Aurora, IL/Metea Valley) remains ranked in the top 20 in the country for digs per set with 2.23.
About the Hawks
Rockhurst ended their regular season with a pair of victories over the Roosevelt Lakers, earning them a share in the GLVC regular season title with a 12-2 record in-conference. The Hawks split with the Miners in their GLVC pair earlier this season, with both teams claiming a five-set victory.
The Hawks lead the conference and rank fifth in the country in aces per set, averaging 1.89. Tyler Zippay and Shay Spadaro have both contributed heavily to that, ranking first and second in the conference for that statistic. Zippay also ranks 17th in the country for assists per set, averaging 9.66.
Defensively, the Hawks ranks 3rd in the conference for blocks per set and 5th in the conference for digs per set. Wesley Yusk leads the team in blocking with .926 blocks per set while Ryan Collins is the teams' leader in digs per set with 1.63.
What's Next
If the Miners defeat Rockhurst, they will move on to Sunday's 12pm championship match to face the winner of #1 Maryville and #4 Roosevelt.
