ROLLA, Mo. — Missouri S&T men's volleyball extended its winning streak to 10 matches on Wednesday with a commanding 25-16, 25-10, 25-18 sweep of Maryville. The victory marked the Miners' most decisive win over the Saints in the programs' eight-match series and the second time in program history S&T has swept the Saints.
The Miners built a 6-3 lead over the Saints to open the match, with
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) putting down three kills while
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) added a solo block and another kill. Sallade fueled a 7-1 scoring run later, recording three more kills and combining with
Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) on a block to increase the Miners' lead to 13-5. Kills by Maryville's AJ Robateau and Makai Scott cut S&T's lead to four at 19-15, but a pair of kills from Meyer aided a 6-1 scoring run for S&T as the Miners took the set 25-16.
Caleb Rohlwing (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) contributed a kill and an ace to a 7-3 scoring run to start set two. Maryville responded with a 3-1 run, but a triple block by Meyer, Johnwick, and
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) helped S&T rebuild a 13-9 lead. The Miners dominated the remainder of the set, outscoring Maryville 12-1 while Meyer put up three kills and three service aces to close out the set 25-10.
Blocks by Edmonds and Rohlwing helped the Miners build a 9-1 lead to open the final set, leaving the Saints searching for answers. The Saints hung with the Miners for a little while, taking the set to 14-7, but a trio of kills from Meyer along with another one
Bartosz Chmielewski (Aurora, IL/Metea Valley) and a Johnwick ace pushed the S&T lead to 19-8. Maryville steadily worked their way back to a six-point deficit, but kills from Sallade, Johnwick, and Meyer helped the Miners seal the sweep with a 25-18 third set.
The Miners dominated the Saints on all fronts. They recorded 51.5 points to Maryville's 28, holdings the Saints to a .022 hitting percentage. The Miners also picked up six aces and eight blocks to Maryville's two.
Meyer led the Miners in points scored, putting up 19.5 for the second-most in a 3-set match in program history. The senior from Arlington Heights hit .520, recording 15 kills with 2 errors on 25 attempts. Johnwick and Chmielewski led the team on the defensive front, putting up team-highs of 4 blocks and 8 digs, respectively.
