ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Missouri S&T softball capped off its GLVC road trip in dominant fashion Sunday, sweeping Lewis University in a doubleheader with a 3-2 win in game one and an 11-8 victory in game two.
Game 1 – Missouri S&T 3, Lewis 2
Missouri S&T relied on a strong performance in the circle and timely hitting to edge Lewis 3-2 in a tightly contested opener.
The Miners broke through in the third inning when Morgan Williams (Midland, MI/Midland) delivered a two-run home run to left field, giving S&T an early advantage it would not relinquish.
Agers was strong in the circle, recording 20 outs while allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits over 6.2 innings to earn the win.
Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) came on in relief to help secure the victory.
Offensively, Williams led the way with two RBI, going 1-for-3, while Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto),
Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale),
Claire Lopez (Olathe, KS/Olathe Northwest),
Taylor Nelson (Hailey, ID/Phillips Exeter Academy), and
AJ Agers (DeSoto, MO/St. Pius X) each added a hit. The Miners were also clean defensively, turning a key double play to maintain control of the game.
Game 2 – Missouri S&T 11, Lewis 8
The Miners' offense erupted in game two, using a pair of big innings to outlast Lewis 11-8 and complete the sweep.
Missouri S&T got on the board first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by Nelson, but Lewis answered early to take a 3-1 lead through two innings. The Miners responded in the third, reclaiming the lead behind a two-run single from Molly Fitzgerald (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) and a two-run triple from
Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/Oswego).
S&T broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six runs to build a commanding lead. LaChappell highlighted the inning with another two-run triple, finishing the game with four RBI, while
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/Basha) added an RBI single and both Nelson and Fitzgerald drew bases-loaded walks.
Lewis mounted a five-run rally in the fifth to close the gap, but the Miners' bullpen held firm. Agers was outstanding in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings to secure the win after Miller started the game.
Missouri S&T showed discipline at the plate with four walks and played error-free defense. LaChappell led the offensive charge with four RBI, while Lopez added patience at the plate with two walks.
