Nelson’s Three-Homer Game Powers Miners to Split at UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Missouri S&T softball split a GLVC doubleheader Saturday at UMSL, falling 4–2 in game onebefore bouncing back with a 7–4 victory in game two. 
 
Game 1 – UMSL 4, Missouri S&T 2 
Missouri S&T outhit UMSL 8–6 in the opener but was unable to capitalize, falling 4–2. 
 
The Miners struck first in the third inning when AJ Agers (DeSoto, MO/St. Pius X) delivered a double to bring home a run and give S&T a 1–0 lead. Missouri S&T added another run later in the contest, but UMSL responded with a decisive fifth inning. 
 
Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) led the Miners offensively with a three-hit performance, while Agers and Molly Fitzgerald (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) each recorded an RBI. Claire Lopez (Olathe, KS/Olathe Northwest) added pressure on the basepaths with two stolen bases. 
 
Agers took the loss in the circle despite a solid outing, allowing four runs on six hits over six innings while striking out four and not issuing a walk. 
 
Game 2 – Missouri S&T 7, UMSL 4 
Missouri S&T answered in a big way in game two, powered by a dominant performance from Taylor Nelson (Hailey, ID/Phillips Exeter Academy), who hit three home runs and drove in four runs in the 7–4 win. 
 
Nelson wasted no time, launching a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Miners an early lead. Missouri S&T added another run in the inning when Molly Fitzgerald (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) drew a bases-loaded walk, making it 3–0. 
 
Nelson struck again in the second inning, blasting a solo home run to center field after an eight-pitch at-bat to extend the lead. 
 
The Miners pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring three runs behind another home run from Nelson—her third of the game—and a home run by Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/Basha), pushing the advantage to 7–4. 
 
In the circle, Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits over seven innings, while striking out three and walking two to earn the win. 
 
Missouri S&T showed patience at the plate, drawing four walks in the contest. 
 
What's Next 
Missouri S&T continues GLVC play Sunday as the Miners travel to Maryville for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
