ROLLA, MO -- Missouri S&T men's basketball earned their ninth win of the season on Friday night, defeating the William Jewell Cardinals 72-69. The Miners overcame a slow start to earn the victory over the visiting Cardinals.
The Miners had a rocky start to Friday night's tilt against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent William Jewell, falling behind 21-10 in the first half after committing 7 turnovers in the first eight minutes.
Adam Rickman (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) contributed six hard-fought points with difficult finishes in the paint to help keep S&T in the game early in the first.
Blaise Beauchamp (Minnetonka, MN/Hopkins),
Cameron Stovall (St. Louis, MO/Vashon), and Rickman led a comeback for S&T in the final eight minutes of the half, combining for 18 points as the Miners outscored the Cardinals by twelve to end the half up 34-27.
An early three-pointer by Jewell's Kyle Scharbrough proved to be a foreshadowing of the Cardinals' success from behind the arc in the half, with the visitors connecting on 6 of their first 11 threes coming out of halftime. The Cardinals cut the deficit to three points twice in the opening minutes of the half, but the Miners fended off the push, getting into the paint and returning their lead to seven at 44-37. Jewell didn't got away though, cutting the score to 46-43 as Bradley Lightbourne continued to draw fouls and put up points at the free throw line.
An "and one" play by
Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) along with a triple by
Aidan Burns (Thayer, MO/Thayer) quickly gave the Miners their largest lead of the game at 52-43. The Cardinals quickly erased the deficit with a trio of three-pointers in the next minute and a half to even the score at 52-52. They stretched the scoring run to 14-0 to take a 57-52 advantage. S&T slowly worked their way back, with Stovall and Young leading a 10-2 run in the last five minutes to give the Miners a 67-63 lead at 2:56. Jewell made it a two-point game with 80 seconds left, but a strong defensive effort by the Miners forced a Cardinals turnover on a shot clock violation to help the Miners hold on for a 72-69 victory.
Stovall and Beauchamp were S&T's leading scorers, putting up 16 and 15 points. Young added 13 to the scoreboard, as well as 5 rebounds, a steal, and a block.
