Ryals selected as GLVC Special Teams Player of Week

9/8/2025 1:37:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Layne Ryals (Louisburg, KS/Louisburg), who drilled a game-winning field goal to give Missouri S&T a win Saturday night over Northeastern State, has been named as the Special Teams Player of the Week for football by the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Ryals connected on a 43-yard attempt as time expired to complete the Miners' come-from-behind win over the RiverHawks in Tahlequah, Okla.  S&T trailed 21-10 heading into the fourth quarter, but overcame that deficit and won the game on Ryals' seventh career field goal of 40 or more yards.  It was one of two field goals made by Ryals in the contest, as he also made a 25-yard attempt just before the first half ended.

The game-winning kick also marked the first time since 1994 that the Miners won a game on the final play of regulation time.

Ryals, the recipient of the GLVC weekly award for the first time in his career, also earned the Miners' first player of the week honor from the conference this season.

Missouri S&T improved to 2-0 on the year with the win and will return to action this Saturday with a 6 p.m. matchup against Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo.
