ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team picked up its second straight victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday night as it blanked Missouri-St. Louis 2-0 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners (4-1-1, 2-1 GLVC) got an early goal from
Mike Banasik (Loekkegade, Denmark/Hjoering Gymnasium) and a late tally from
Joao Vieira (Punta del Este, Uruguay/International College) as they improved to 4-0 at home this season heading into Sunday's matchup with Maryville to close out a three-game homestand.
Banasik scored at the 10:12 mark as he got a pass from
Joseph Sommer (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) with an UMSL defender close by, then got free from him and goalkeeper Jack Franklin to put the Miners on the scoreboard.
That lead held up for the evening as the Miner defense was able to keep the Tritons (1-2-3, 1-1-2 GLVC) at bay all night. UMSL did have a 10-9 advantage in shots, but only three of the 10 by the Tritons made it to S&T goalkeeper
Cavitt Bruhn (Plano, TX/Plano).
The Tritons' best scoring chance came in the 20
th minute, as Bruhn turned away a long shot attempt by Kyler Sorber to keep the Miners in front.
Vieira added the insurance tally in the 77
th minute after receiving an inbounds pass from
Jake Salazar-Blair (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and ripping a shot from about 20 yards away into the upper left corner to double the S&T advantage.
The Miners will face the Saints (3-3-1, 2-2 GLVC), who lost 2-1 at Drury Friday, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
