EAST PEORIA, IL -- The Miners picked up a 4-1 victory over #2 Lewis in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament yesterday. They are now set to face the #6 Indianapolis Greyhounds in a rematch of last year's championship game.
About the Greyhounds
The Greyhounds upset #3 Maryville yesterday by a score of 4-2. GLVC Freshman of the Year Cheyenne Eads started at pitcher for UIndy, picking up 5 strikeouts and only allowing 2 hits in a complete game. The two hits that she allowed were big ones though, giving up a solo home run in the 2nd and an RBI double in the 3rd.
Freshman Maya Rodriguez headlined the Hounds batters yesterday, going 2-for-2 at the plate with 3 RBIs and a walk. Josie Jager is 7th in GLVC-only stats for batting average with a .419 and contributed in yesterday's win as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
About the Miners
S&T grabbed a 4-0 lead early in yesterday's game thanks to a pair of RBIs on a
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) double along with RBIs from
Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) and
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/).
Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) pitched a complete game, throwing three hitless innings and only giving up one run.
The Miners dropped both games against UIndy earlier this year, falling victim to unfavorable weather that plagued power hitters and led to uncharacteristic errors in the field. Miller picked up 11 strikeouts in game two of that doubleheader, while Eads allowed 4 hits and 3 walks in 27 batters faced in the same game.
What's Next
A win will take the Miners on to face the winner of #1 Drury and #5 Illinois Springfield tomorrow at 10am, while a loss would take the Miners into a matchup later today against the winner of #4 McKendree and #8 Rockhurst.
