Miners Drop Final Match of Regular Season; Set Program Digs Records

CHESTERFIELD, MO  --  Missouri S&T Men's Volleyball concluded their regular season earlier this evening, falling 3-1 against the Maryville Saints. The Miners recorded 63 digs tonight... setting a new program-record for most digs in a match regardless of length.

Set 1
Kills from Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison), Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East), and Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) led to a 5-0 lead to start the match, forcing the Saints to take a timeout to regroup. Maryville took four of the next five points coming out of the timeout, cutting it to a two point game at 6-4. A 3-0 S&T run a couple of points later returned the Miner lead to five though, making it 10-5. Maryville cut the Miners' lead to two at 14-12 before S&T used three 3-0 runs to pull away and claim the set 25-18.

Set 2
The teams traded runs in the opening points, with S&T leading off with three in a row before Maryville responded with the next four. Back-and-forth scoring kept things close until Maryville went on runs of 5-1 and 3-0 to go up 19-13. The Miners still showed life late though, taking four of the next five to draw within three of the Saints. They were unable to put together another significant run though, dropping the set 25-21.

Set 3
The Miners found themselves down 9-6 early in the set, but would take the lead with a 7-2 run that featured four kills by Meyer. Maryville responded though, scoring on five of the next six to go up 16-14. An ace by Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) capped off a 4-0 late in the set, putting the Miners up 20-18. S&T maintained their lead until 23-21 when the Saints put together a three-point run to give Maryville set point at 24-23. The Miners saved a trio of set points before a Maryville double block ended the set at 28-26.

Set 4
S&T took an early lead at 5-1, giving them a four-point advantage that they would later extend to six with a 4-0 run. Maryville closed the six-point gap quickly, taking eight of the next nine points to take a 14-13 advantage. The Saints continued to pull away late, using a 6-1 run to take the set 25-20.
