EAST PEORIA, IL -- S&T won 4-1 against #2 Lewis today in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. They will advance to play #6 Indianapolis tomorrow at 2pm.
Starting pitchers
Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) and Delaney Garden took care of business quickly in the opening inning, each picking up three outs in three at bats.
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) recorded the first hit of the game with a single in the top of the 2nd but was left stranded after a strikeout and a popout.
Two fly outs and a ground out for Lewis took the game into the top of the 3rd. A single by
Joselyn Ulloa (Chicago, IL/) with one out on the board started the Miners' success in the inning.
Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) would then record a single of her own to set up an RBI double for
Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk), leaving the Miners with a 1-0 lead and runners on second and third.
The Miners got another double two at bats later in the 3rd, with
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) sending one deep to left center to score both Anderson and LaChappell. Thompson would add one more run in the inning with a single through the left side, bringing Nelson home and making it a 4-0 game.
The Flyers recorded lead off singles in the 4th and 5th innings but were unable to bring anyone home. S&T threatened again in the top of the 6th, getting singles from
Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) and
Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/) to put two on with only one out before back-to-back fly outs cut the inning short.
Garden would continue her successful day at the plate with a triple early in the bottom of the 6th. A fly out to left field held up Garden at third, leaving the Miners an out away from ending the inning. Two walks in a row loaded the bases for Lewis with two outs still on the board before Thompson caught a foul fly ball to end the inning.
Lewis hit a lead off triple in the bottom of the 7th, scoring their first run of the day two at bats later on a groundout to Nelson. The Miners put the game away in the next two at bats though, getting a fly out and a foul fly out to take the game 4-1.
