BOLIVAR, MO -- The Miners remain 10th in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings after splitting today's doubleheader against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats.
Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) recorded a home run in each game, improving her season total to 12 to become the new GLVC leader this season.
Game 1: Southwest Baptist 5, Missouri S&T 4
Both teams recorded hits in the opening inning, but the Bearcats were the only ones to score, adding two runs after a pair of singles and a double. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for S&T in the next inning with no outs on the board, but a groundout into a double play and a fly out would prevent the Miners from bringing anyone home.
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) and
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) both recorded RBIs in the top of the third, tying the game at 2-2. Anderson hit her first home run of the day in the 4th three at bats after a double
Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central), giving the Miners a 4-2 lead. After holding the Bearcats scoreless for four straight innings, S&T's defense struggled in the bottom of the 6th, giving up 4 hits and 3 runs to allow SBU to take a 5-4 lead. The Miners picked up two singles in the top of the 7th, but did not bring anyone home to end the game in a 5-4 loss.
Game 2: Missouri S&T 3, Southwest Baptist 1
A solo home run by the Bearcats in the bottom of the 2nd gave them an early lead. The Miners' defense got out of trouble later in that inning though, getting out of a bases loaded situation on a flyout to
Joselyn Ulloa (Chicago, IL/) in left field.
Anderson recorded singles in the 1st and 3rd, but it was not until the top of the 4th that S&T scored their first run on a throwing error. A leadoff double by
Ty Neal (Enid, OK/Kremlin-Hilldale) in the top of the 6th put a runner in scoring position, getting all the way to third base before a foul out ended the inning with the score still 1-1. Anderson and Nelson both recorded solo home runs in the top of the 7th though, giving the Miners a 3-1 lead that they would hold on to for another GLVC win.
