ROLLA, MO -- Missouri S&T suffered a pair of losses against Truman State yesterday, losing the second game 8-3 and falling 8-7 in a thrilling, 10-inning game one.
Game 1: Truman State 8, Missouri S&T 7 (10 innings)
The Bulldogs were the first to get on the board, scoring in the opening inning when Caragan Baker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. They added two more in the second to extend their lead to 3-0.
Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) would drive in a run in the 3rd, but the Bulldogs responded with a 2 RBI single in the 5th to go ahead 5-1.
Missouri S&T had a big 5th inning, scoring four and tying the game thanks to a home run by Grobe and a single by
Jordyn Davis (Broken Arrow, OK/) that each brought home two S&T runners. Looking to win it in a walk off, the Miners got a lead off single from
Taylor Nelson (Jefferson City, MO/Phillips Exeter Academy) in the bottom of the 7th. An error by Truman's second baseman allowed
Tori Thompson (Chandler, AZ/) to reach in the following at bat, putting runners on first and second with no outs. An attempted bunt would go awry for the Miners though, with the ball popping up in the air high enough for Truman's first baseman to make the catch and complete the double play at first before the runner could get back. Nelson was left stranded in the next at bat after a pop out ended the inning with the score still 5-5.
A lead off home run for the Bulldogs in the top of the 8th put them up 6-5, with three more hits in the inning helping the team score another run to take a 7-5 lead.
Allie Kelly (Park Hills, MO/Central) and
Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) both recorded singles in the first two at bats in the bottom of the 8th, advancing to second and third in the next at bat. With two outs on the board later in the inning, Nelson singled through the right side to score both Kelly and Jones, tying the game at 7-7 and pushing the game to a 9th inning.
A hitless 9th inning took the game into the 10th where the Bulldogs got a runner on base with a hit by pitch, bringing her home next at bat with a double hit deep to the outfield. The Miners were unable to respond in the bottom of the 10th, losing the game 8-7.
Game 2: Truman State 8, Missouri S&T 3
S&T grabbed the early lead in game two with singles from Davis and
Kaylee LaChappell (Oswego, IL/) in the bottom of the 2nd to open up a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs caught them in the top of the third though, getting 7 hits that inning and taking a 5-3 advantage. They would add a sixth run in the top of the 4th as well.
The Miners had a runner in scoring position with only one out in the bottom of the 4th, but a fielder's choice got the force out at third and led to another scoreless inning for S&T. Truman hit three singles and a double in the top of the 6th, making the score 8-3 and leading to them holding on to win by that margin.
