GLVC Tournament Round 1: Miners Face McKendree in Conference Tournament Opener

ST. CHARLES, MO  --  Missouri S&T enters the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament as the #1 seed after a historic regular season performance. Round one will be tomorrow at 12pm at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Missouri, in a rematch against #8 McKendree.

About the Bearcats
McKendree will be coming into the tournament on a high note, having won three of their last four games, including winning their last two in a row with victories over Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst. They ended the season with a 14-13 overall record, going 11-9 in-conference.

The Bearcats are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the GLVC this season, ranking second in three-point field goal percentage with 38.7% and first in opponent three-point percentage with a league-low 30.9% allowed. Kevin Stein is the team's leading scorer this season, averaging 14.2 points per game. Destin Whitaker leads the GLVC in three-point shooting percentage, hitting on 44 of 90 attempts for a 48.9%.


About the Miners
Missouri S&T has had highs and lows over the closing weeks of the regular season, defeating regionally-ranked Lincoln 79-75 on Thursday before stumbling in a loss to Drury on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Miners remain top ten in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll, ranking #10 and ended the regular season with the winningest record in school history (23-4).

The Miners are top three in the conference for three different categories, including first in field goal percentage and blocks per game. Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) and Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove) have been the Miners "one-two punch" this season, with both athletes making All-GLVC First Team for their efforts. Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) is a top five performer in the conference in six key categories, most notably ranking second in field goal percentage with 57.0%. Williams has shot well for the Miners too, shooting at 51.1%. He is also second in the conference in assists per game and fourth in assist to turnover ratio.

What's Next
If the Miners defeat the McKendree Bearcats tomorrow, they will advance to play a round two game on Saturday.
