ROLLA, MO -- After dropping the first set 25-19 tonight, the Miners came storming back to overwhelm the Roosevelt Lakers 19-25, 25-17, 25-15, 30-28 and pick up their fourth straight IVA win.
Set 1
A few early errors from the Lakers led to a 4-0 lead for S&T, but an 8-1 Roosevelt run would flip the script in the visitors' favor, putting them up 11-8. RU used a 4-1 run later in the set to pull further ahead, going up 19-14 on the Miners. S&T and Roosevelt exchanged points down the stretch, with the Miners unable to close the deficit, falling 25-19 in set one.
Set 2
Back-to-back errors by the Miners allowed the Lakers to take a small lead at 6-4 before S&T put together a 4-1 run to take an 8-7 lead. The Miners would stretch their lead to eight later in the set, going on a 10-2 run in the ensuing points. Roosevelt would cut the Miners' lead to five late, but S&T took four of the next five points to prevent a Laker comeback and win the set 25-17.
Set 3
A 7-1 S&T run featuring kills from
Aaron Sallade (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) and
Nate Meyer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) would help the Miners go ahead 10-6 in the third set. At 15-11 the Miners put together an 8-2 run to draw within two points of winning the set. Kills from Meyer and
Tyler Johnwick (Lombard, IL/Glenbard East) would help S&T take the third set at 25-15 and go up two sets to one.
Set 4
Early errors from S&T would lead to a 6-0 lead for Roosevelt, prompting a timeout from Coach
Ryan Thompson. Four kills from
Camden Seaver (Palatine, IL/William Friend) in the following points would help the Miners tie the score at 7-7, eventually taking their first lead of the set at 12-9 after a 5-0 run. The Lakers hung around though, never allowing the Miners to lead by more than three and eventually reclaiming the lead at 20-19 after a four-point run. Sallade,
Grant Edmonds (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison), and
Grogan Kraus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) would combine for two double blocks a few points later, helping the Miners to a 4-1 run and a two-point lead at 24-22. A service error and a kill from RU's Andrea Di Paola would help tie the set at 24-24 though. Kills by Sallade and Seaver would keep the Miners playing ahead in the final points of the match, with back-to-back kills from Meyer ending the set at 30-28 and giving S&T the 3-1 win.
