SPRINGFIELD, IL -- After the winningest season in Missouri S&T history, the Miners are in the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Regionals for the first time since 1995-96. The team is set to host the regional in a partnership with the University of Illinois Springfield at UIS' campus this weekend.
The Miners received a #1 seed as an at-large bid to host the regionals and will play #8-seed Malone University in the first round, with game time set for 5pm on Saturday. Malone was a bid-stealer from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, making their conference tournament with a 13-15 record before winning three-straight games to claim the GMAC championship and earn an automatic bid to the tournament.
The Miners look to build on a strong season after going 23-4 in the regular season and winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season title. They also reached a program-high ranking of #5 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches during the regular season. Stars like
Andrew Young (Ballwin, MO/Marquette) and
Lovell Williams (Rogers, MN/Maple Grove) have been key contributors to the teams' success this season, with both men receiving First-Team All-GLVC honors for their work.
