Batting Woes Doom Miners in Losses to Bearcats and Reddies

ARKADELPHIA, AR  --  On day two of the Hawkins McGhee Memorial, the Miners faced the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats and the Henderson State Reddies. They lost both games, dropping game one to the Bearcats 7-1 and falling short 6-0 in game two against HSU.

Game 1: Bearcats 7, Miners 1
The Miners got off to a slow start at bat, failing to record a hit in the first three innings against the Bearcats. Contrarily, Northwest Missouri State managed to score at least one run in the first four innings, taking a 5-0 lead going to the middle of the fourth.

Trista Grobe (DeSoto, MO/DeSoto) recorded the Miners' first hit of the day in the as lead off batter in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a single to center field. A single from Keira Jones (Richmond Hill, GA/Richmond Hill) three at bats later put Grobe in position to score off of a groundout by Autumn Trower (Troy, MO/) before the Bearcats' were able to close out the inning. Neither team allowed a hit in the next two innings, holding the contest at 5-1 in the Bearcats' favor. A single, a stolen base, a triple, and a Miners fielding error led to NWMSU adding two more in the top of the seventh for the final runs of the game by either team as the Bearcats took the game 7-1.

Julia Kanoy (Hamilton, Mo./Penney) garnered the loss for her time in the first two innings, with Mia Miller (Waterloo, IL/) coming in and finishing the game with four hits allowed in her 5.0 innings pitched.

Game 2: Reddies 6, Miners 0
The Miners recorded the first hit of the game off a single by Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) in the top of the second, eventually advancing runners to second and third on a sac bunt before a line out ended the inning and left two Miners on base. Tinley Beecham (Mapleton, IL/) carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the third with two outs, before a single by HSU broke that run.

Beecham was replaced by Kanoy in the top of the fourth after giving up a pair of singles to open the inning. Kanoy would get the Miners out of the inning with only one run allowed, but two innings later the Reddies scored five runs off of four hits and two Miner fielding errors to take a 6-0 lead right before the final inning. The Miners were unable to get anything rolling in the deciding inning, failing to record a hit and falling 6-0 to the host school.
