Miners Pick Up Third Win in a Row with Sweep of Jewell

ROLLA, MO  --  Missouri S&T Volleyball is on a three-match win streak after defeating the William Jewel Cardinals 25-19, 25-16, 25-12 today. They have won six of their last seven.

S&T freshman class played started the match off strong, with Elly Decker (Manhattan, IL/Lincoln Way West), Addie Schoenberger (Menomonee Falls, WI/Hamilton Sussex), Danielle Wilke (Palmer Lake, CO/Palmer Ridge), and Kate Zipprich (Hardin, IL/Calhoun) combining for 8 kills, 2 aces, & a block early to give the Miners a 13-3 lead in the opening set. A 6-0 run by Jewell put them back in the set quickly, but the Miners answered with a 3-0 run to go up 16-9. The Cardinals went on a 3-0 run late in the set, cutting the deficit to four again at 22-18 before the Miners closed the set on a 4-1 with Selin Ozdemir (Ankara, Turkey/TED Ankara Koleji) and Lexi Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, IL/Newsome) contributing kills while Wilke and Zipprich combined for back-to-back blocks.

Two kills and an ace from Kosmopolis helped the Miners to a 6-1 lead in the start of the second frame, while Schoenberger added a pair of kills to the early advantage. Jewell began inching their way back but a 5-1 run by S&T would extend their lead to 15-8. The Cardinals grabbed a 5-1 run of their own a few points later but it would not be enough to come back as the Miners ended the set by taking 8 of the last 10 points.

The third set started out closer than the previous two, with the Miners and Cardinals knotted up at 5 apiece early. Zipprich and Wilke would each contribute two kills and a block assist in the following points to give the Miners a 5-0 run. The Miners dominated the remainder of the set, getting 9 kills and 4 aces, with Annie Arand (Washington, MO/St. Francis Borgia) accounting for two of those aces, as the Miners closed out the set 25-12.

Wilke's 11 kills led the team and are a personal-best for the freshman middle. After not starting set one, Ozdemir came in and played well, picking up a career-high 11 digs. Schoenberger had another strong perferomance offensively, recording 7 kills and 0 errors on 13 attempts. Three Miners ended the day with a hitting percentage above .300 with Schoenberger hitting .538, Wilke hitting .474, and Ozdemir hitting .333.
